LOOKING THROUGH

Photobucket

While putting together an exhibition proposal today I was reminded of the intense work of one of my favorite film artists, James Benning. One of the lesser known avant-gardests of the 1970's, his work is long-form experiments in interrogating landscapes visually. 11X14 ('77) has an eye on Chicago. Los (2001) frames a series of thirty-five, 2.5 minute shots of the workings of LA while his new
13 Lakes is a feature length film looking at 13 lakes in which half the frame is sky and the other half water. They take it all in and force you to look through the scene, not at it.

"You never clock out as an artist. You can't quit the job either."
- JB

Plus he is a mathematician.

A LIFE FOR A LIFETIME

Photobucket

WITHOUT THIS MAN AND THE MANY OTHERS WHO SUPPORTED HIM, I WOULD NOT BE WHERE I AM TODAY.

HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ONLY 40 SHORT YEARS AGO LIFE EXISTED IN ANOTHER WORLD FULL OF IGNORANCE, DISTRUST, HATE, AND VIOLENCE...OR WAS THAT 40 MINUTES AGO?

GUESS IT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE WE NEED THIS MAN NOW MORE THAN EVER.

THANK YOU MARTIN LUTHER KING Jr.!

IN HONOR OF THIS AMAZING MAN, DJ KAVALIER PUT TOGETHER AN ANNUAL MLK TRIBUTE SET FROM 2001-2005, LIVE TRIBUTE SETS OF MUSIC ON REV. KING'S DAY OF HONOR.

I LOVE THIS MAN SO MUCH I HAND-CUT A SCREENPRINT TEMPLATE AND REPRODUCED HIS LIKENESS AS A WAY FOR ME TO REMEMBER WHAT THE WORLD DESPERATELY NEEDS. HIS WORDS ON WAR DURING THE VIETNAM CRISIS RING TRUE NOW.
